From our sails to our sunscreen Sailing Asante Charters tries our best to create the most Eco-Friendly experience for the Virgin Islands and our guests. Protecting our environment both above and below the water is very important to us.
Protecting Our Reefs
Wearing reef safe sunscreen or sun protective clothing is one of the best ways that we can protect our beautiful coral reefs. Our coral reefs provide an amazing exploration opportunity teaming with life, but also needs a delicate balance. On July 20, 2019 the Governor of the USVI signed a bill into law that bans the importation, sale, and possession of sunscreens containing the “Toxic 3-Os” – oxybenzone, octinaxate, and octocrylene. Sprays, powders, and SPF 50+ sunscreens have also been linked to damaging our reefs.
On Asante we ask our guests to refrain from using sunscreens containing the “Toxic 3-Os”, spray sunscreens, oils, or self tanning lotions. Mineral sunscreens containing non-nano zinc, zinc oxide, and titanium oxide are considered safe for coral reefs. For more information please take a look at the Island Green Living Association.
